Family's feud culminates in exhumation

The body of Joseph Tomei, who died 20 months ago in Lawrence County, will be exhumed today as a bitter family dispute comes to a head.

Mr. Tomei's sons, suspicious about the cause of death, obtained two court orders to remove his body from a mausoleum. They have hired Dr. Cyril H. Wecht to perform the belated autopsy this afternoon at Carlow University.

Their stepmother, Edith Tomei, retained a lawyer and argued against the autopsy for almost a year, saying it was unnecessary. She relented last summer, but plans to have her own expert pathologist monitoring Dr. Wecht's work.

Joseph Tomei was 59 when he died on June 13, 2006, in his home in Shenango. He had undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery two years earlier, so the Lawrence County coroner concluded that a heart ailment caused his death.

about this blog

Halloween has not truly accomplished its task unless each of us is in some way frightened. It attempts to do this by capitalizing on our primeval fears. In recent years, though, we have set aside our primitive beliefs for we now consider ourselves to be educated beings. But no matter how far we evolve, there will always be something in the far reaches of our educated minds which will bring us back to a time when we feared the moon itself. We cannot escape it, for deep down we are still animals. We will always be haunted. We will always know fear. That is why Halloween "spooks" us.

This particular night frightened our ancestors, and it will continue to frighten their descendants. As soon as the sun sets and All Hallow's Eve is upon us, witches, ghosts, and goblins awaken from their long sleep.

Federal cuts hurt Bucks rehab program

President Bush's 2009 budget proposal would cut funding to recovery programs across the country, including a local program that helps people remain drug and alcohol free.

The Bucks County Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence Inc. was counting on $350,000 to expand its programming into Bristol Township, said Executive Director Beverly Haberle. The council was awarded the grant in September and earlier this month Haberle signed a lease on a space at the former Delhaas High School on Route 413 where it planned to deliver services.

It is very important to people who are struggling with recovery and their families to be able to get the help they need and sustain recovery, she said.

The Recovery Community Services Program is one of 13 Health and Human Services programs totaling $2.8 billion that would be cut or reduced if the budget plan passes.

Where the scammers are

A cheque soon arrives; the victim deposits it and wires back money for some sort of "processing fee" — all before realizing the cheque was fake. By that point, the money is long gone.

According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported that they handed over $1.1-billion to scammers in 2006, up from about $570-million in 2004. Consumer Sentinel, a database maintained by the FTC, received more than 670,000 complaints in 2006 — about 430,000 of which had to do with fraud.

But these numbers may only nick the surface: The FTC estimates that nine of 10 fraud victims never report the crime. "We're awash in a sea of fraud," says Steve Baker, director of the Midwest region for the FTC.

Scammers have been around forever, and if anything, they keep getting more nimble.

These 'Cheerios' worth $1,581

The Maryland man's unique shoplifting scheme apparently worked once at a Wal-Mart store in Lancaster County.

But when Kevin Edward Smith, 33, of Baltimore, tried the same alleged caper at the Wal-Mart in East Lampeter Township on Saturday evening, he found police waiting for him.

East Lampeter police said Smith took three large boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios cereal from a food shelf to the back of the store. There he opened the bottom of the boxes and pulled the packs of cereal out of them, police said.

Smith then proceeded to the health and beauty shelves and filled the empty cereal boxes from the bottom up with razors and razor-blade cartridges, non-prescription medications and other personal cosmetic-type items, Officer Ron Bezzard said.

Newlywed Kid Rock Leaves Ex Heartbroken

The model-girlfriend Kid Rock left behind to wed Pamela Anderson has poured out her heart to the media, revealing the callous rocker ended their romance with a text message.

Sexy brunette Jill Marie Gulseth dated the rocker for three months earlier this year, until he ditched her to focus on winning his former fiancee Anderson back.

Kid Rock's wooing worked -- he and Anderson wed in St. Tropez, France, last weekend after a whirlwind romance.

But while the rocker, real name Robert Ritchie, was celebrating his nuptials, his ex was nursing a broken heart.

Gulseth tells In Touch magazine, "To be broken up with in a text was just so shocking and upsetting. I cried a lot to friends and family."

The 22-year-old beauty adds, "It's not easy seeing it in the news every day.
