| Weighing nearly 400 pounds, man walks off half his weight
He wasn't happy with his weight and neither were his doctors. In addition to taking medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol -- his physician warned him that he was on track to become a diabetic. Reality hit in January 2006 at a Pittsburgh Steelers game. Novak had gone to smoke a cigarette. "We were walking back up to our seats, and I started getting winded," says Novak. "I didn't feel right, I started sweating. I didn't think I would make it back up. My heart [was] beating a million times a minute; I thought I was having a heart attack." Novak stood against a cold wall for 20 minutes to catch his breath. Fortunately, he wasn't having a heart attack but he was so frightened that thoughts of his family began to race through his mind. "A lot of things went through my head, about saying goodbye to my kids," says Novak choking back his tears.
FDA: Contaminated Pet Food Caused Illnesses, Deaths
FDA intents to take enforcement action against companies marketing unapproved injectable colchicine, a drug used to treat gout.Colchicine is a highly toxic drug that can easily be administered in excessive doses, especially when given intravenously. There is a narrow margin between an effective dose of the drug and a toxic dose that can result in serious health risks, including death. The FDA is aware of 50 reports of adverse events associated with the use of intravenous colchicine, including 23 deaths. Potentially fatal effects include low blood cell counts, cardiac events, and organ failure."Today's action supports our ongoing efforts to end the marketing of unapproved drugs with serious health risks," said Janet Woodcock, M.D., FDA's deputy commissioner for scientific and medical programs, chief medical officer, and acting director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).
Dreaming of a 'green' Christmas: Real or fake, potted or cut - in ...
Take your family out to cut a tree at a local tree farm," advises Woodrow Nelson of the Arbor Day Foundation, an organization dedicated to celebrating trees. "Those folks do a good job of replanting their crop every year. You get native trees that are local - find the nearest one, and make it a family outing." Of course, greenest of all would be an outdoor tree: a newly planted Colorado blue spruce, say, just outside the biggest north-facing window of your home (to block winds and help lower heating bills), Nelson says. He did that at home, and instead of papier-mache bird ornaments, the tree attracts real feathered friends, as well as neighbors' compliments. But, Nelson acknowledges, it might not be the towering holiday symbol most people are looking for. For indoor trees, there are "green" arguments for both real and fake.
Bingle snapper defends shots
The merest attention given to any blog is enough to make a thinking man start shaking his head in disbelief, as the vast majority of members of our society simply will form the worst view of anything. The shot that I have seen was glorious and all should be justifiably pleased with the result. As far as the opinions of the great unwashed are concerned, don't listen to them. They are ignorant and therefore it is a waste of time. Posted by: Anonymous of course 9:55am today Comment 1 of 2 .
Schwarzenegger's Lottery Idea Questioned
Schwarzenegger introduced the idea last year, and at times he has pitched it as a financial godsend, capable of reducing state debts, boosting education funding or helping to bankroll universal health care. If the deal comes to pass, it will be the first time a state has privatized its lottery. But several Wall Street investment banks that have analyzed the idea for Schwarzenegger's administration say the estimate he touts is wildly optimistic. The documents were obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request. The governor is employing the rosiest of projections from Lehman Brothers, which pegged the value of California's lottery at $16.1 billion to $37 billion over 40 years. Other Wall Street investment banks , Bear Stearns, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley , were more conservative.
