Billionaire investor Michael Price's value approach is to buy stock in out-of-favor small cap companies that are of good values. This strategy has made him the 271st richest person in the world. These are his buys and sells during the fourth quarter. He owns 81 stocks with a total value of $511 million. Buyout offer draws less response than initially estimated
It looks like the Fayetteville School District will be waiting until after Jan. 25 to see if participation in its voluntary buyout program for experienced teachers matches expectations. Educators Preferred Corp., the Michigan-based firm administering the program, had predicted about 70 employees would participate. With eight days left until the deadline to register, the number of employees who have submitted paperwork to participate is less than 25 percent of that amount. "So far we have had 17 that have actually submitted the paperwork," said Greg Mones, human resources director for the district. Mones said he anticipates there are some employees who will participate that are currently undecided or haven't yet turned in their paperwork. He said assumes most of the early submittals were from employees who knew early on they wanted to participate.

As immigration peaked as a political issue last year and local governments began to adopt a variety of restrictive measures, a number of economic commentators (myself included) noted that this was a dangerous policy to pursue given a weakening economy. Policies which drove immigrants away from restrictionist areas not only cut off the commercial business provided by those populations but also undermined housing markets. Even where immigrant households were not primarily homeowners, their presence in the market as tenants helped support overall housing demand and provided needed cash flows to landlords struggling to pay mortgages. With a housing-led downturn taking shape, immigrant departure seemed potentially disastrous. But one has to wonder whether that's the proper causation.
